Pathways was central to the community's effort of celebrating the Gateway to downtown, as well as a beginning contribution to the creative and economic growth in the Fitchburg community. There were two goals for the project. The first was to create a sculpture that was both reflective of Fitchburg's rich history while simultaneously contemporary and marking the entrance to the historical and cultural downtown. The second goal was to execute the project as a community public art project—to actively engage many diverse sectors of the community in many different settings.
Therefore, the project centered around a dynamic public planning effort, and began with gathering community input for six months beginning in May 2009. The design of Pathways integrated these community ideas as well as met agreed upon project specifications from the public art committee, while also maintaining a pleasing visual aesthetic. This process focused centrally on the “sense of place” concept outlined in the original call for artists.
I worked closely with the community to gather thoughts and inspiration for the final piece. Pathways incorporates imagery that is meaningful to the community, while also depicts imagery that I often include within my work. The river and railroad as seen from above weave through upright pillars which represent the past, present, future and community of Fitchburg. While sculpted items are reminiscent of the industrial era of the mill town, the floating pieces of paper located centrally within the piece also honor the memories and thoughts of the old train depot that once stood. The brick base also pays tribute to the mills, while also serving as a visual pathway that is shared by all.
Pathways was created through a collaboration of The Fitchburg Cultural Alliance, The City of Fitchburg and Fitchburg State University. Fitchburg Cultural Alliance, Massachusetts Cultural Council, New England Foundation for the Arts, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and Demoulas - Market Basket funded The Art on Water Street Project.
